7 OUR VACATION DAYS OF 1918.
Burroughs, John. 1921 2 (a) (Edison, Ford, Burroughs and Firestone) (Burroughs, John.) OUR VACATION DAYS OF 1918. No Place (Akron), 1918. 11 7/8" X 8 3/4", not paged (63p), 77 sepia photos, 3/4 morocco with printed boards, light wear at spine extremities, o/w vg+ in lightly worn original slipcase. Laid in is card of Mr. Harvey S. Firestone. In MEN AND RUBBER, Harvey Firestone wrote, "Among the larger events of my life I must record the camping trips which I was priviledged to take with Thomas A. Edison, Henry Ford and John Burroughs. We had seven of these trips... On four of them we had John Burroughs. On another came President Harding for a couple of days... We may not have any more camping trips for...instead of a simple gypsy-like fortnight on the road, we found ourselves in the midst of motion picture operators, reporters, and curiosity seekers. We became a kind of traveling circus..." The 1st camping trip was in 1916. Firestone continues: "We had all planned for a trip in 1917, but the coming of the war found us with our hands too full...and it was not until 1918 that we had our next trip-and it was the best that we ever had." Firestone, with characteristic style had an elaborate book prepared to record this vacation. The book is dedicated to Burroughs (he died in 1921 while the book was being prepared) and the text was written by him. Printed on heavy stock, the text is well illustrated by photos of the "campers" as they travel from Pittsburgh to Ashville to Hagarstown. We have not found any production data for the book, but it was expensively done and the number of copies was very limited.
