This series of essays by Mitford (1787-1855) was begun in 1819 for "The Lady's Magazine" and gathered in a volume in 1843. The setting is Three Mile Cross near Reading, England. Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938) was a noted English illustrator and portrait painter.
