Brown (1816-1884), an abolitionist, autobiographer, novelist, and poet, was born into slavery in Kentucky, was raised in St. Louis where he worked with printer Elijah Lovejoy, and later moved to Ohio where he worked with the underground railway. His novel "Clotel" (1853) is perhaps the first by an African-American. This present work begins with a history of the involvement of Blacks in the American Revolution and continues to the War of 1812, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.
