(incl. 2 maps, one of which is colored; 47 plates; 12 plates in the Cypriote character), covers rebacked with old spine intact, endpapers have been replaced, text lightly soiled, partly unopened, ownership stamp on title-page, good. 2nd edition. Cesnola (1832-1904) was an Italian Army officer and archaeologist, came to the U.S. (c1860) and served in the Civil War. He was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1865 and served as U.S. Consul to Cyprus, 1865-1876, and from 1879 until 1904 he was Director of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) and his brother Wilhelm (1786-1859) were German philologists and mythologists, best known today for "Grimm's Fairy Tales." Jacob published his "Deutsche Mythologie" in 1835. Upon Jacob Grimm's death his notes for a fourth volume were arranged by Prof. E.H. Meyer and that work appears in this edition. Also included is Grimm's important "Preface" to the 1844 edition.
