Cesnola (1832-1904) was an Italian Army officer and archaeologist, came to the U.S. (c1860) and served in the Civil War. He was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1865 and served as U.S. Consul to Cyprus, 1865-1876, and from 1879 until 1904 he was Director of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
